Like many people this year, I have spent some of my free time being entertained by the wide variety of TV shows and movies offered through Netflix. Recently, I stumbled on the 2019 documentary film, The Call to Courage, which depicts Dr. Brené Brown as she discusses what it takes to choose courage over comfort in today’s culture. Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work, and is also a lecturer, author, and podcast host. The premise of the documentary, which is also the basis for one of her books, Daring Greatly, comes from this quote by President Teddy Roosevelt:

Being “in the arena” is tough work and much struggle. We choose, each day, whether or not we are going to be bystanders, watching from the safe seats in the nose-bleed section, or whether we are going to face the uncertainty and challenges of a more courageous choice – a worthy cause.

Yesterday, I was blessed with the opportunity to witness the “Rite of Sending” at Mass. At this celebration, adults and children who are choosing to become Catholic, are introduced to the Parish community. Catechumens, those who are not yet baptized, sign the Book of the Elect as a sign of their commitment and discipleship. Candidates, who have received Baptism but have not yet received Holy Eucharist are commended by the parish to continue their journey. The members of the parish promise to continue their prayers for this most special group. This year, in addition to one school staff member who is participating in RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), there are 23 children who have elected to participate in RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children). Thirteen are current SMS students, and three more have applied to our school for next year. Choosing to be a Catholic Christian is most definitely an “in the arena” commitment. Our faith requires much of us, but we know that the rewards that await us are infinite. This quote from EWTN’s Mother Angelica sums it up quite well:

So, to the students and adults that took another step toward being fully initiated into the Catholic Church yesterday, we welcome you, we congratulate you, and we are praying for you. We, too, have chosen to stand “in the arena” and we are glad you are joining us.

Deo Gratias
Kathy
