Alleluia, He is Risen! I hope your Easter break and subsequent week of Distance Learning was relaxing, refreshing, and joyful.
We are only two months from the end of the school year, but we continue to study hard, and learn, and grow. That is true for students and staff alike. For several years, St. Michael’s School has worked toward implementing the successful teaching and learning strategies articulated in John Hattie’s Visible Learning research. Utilizing tactics proven to be highly effective (based on meta-analyses of thousands of studies), St. Michael’s School is committed to fostering exceptional student growth. We have already seen the effects of the work we have implemented in our student outcomes. Some of the strategies we have been implementing are Teacher Clarity, Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, Effective Feedback, and Peer and Self-Assessment. Further, we work to support students in the important work of taking charge of their own learning and become Assessment Capable Learners, who know where they are in the learning continuum, know where they are going, and understand the tools to progress to the next level.
Today, we are excited to welcome Dave Nagel, a national and international educational consultant and researcher, who will be visiting our classrooms, speaking to our students, and assessing our progress as a school. Dave will look at all of the work that we have done over the past several years, and provide us with valuable feedback so we can continue to improve. Some of your children may tell you that they were selected to share their school experience with our facilitator. In fact, student perception and understanding of our goals is the best indicator of our success.
For the remainder of this school year, and all of next year, we will continue to build on this work. The process will guide us as we pursue our goal of becoming recognized as a certified Visible Learning School, one of only a few in the nation. We hope to be a model and mentor for other schools in the future.
